‘Race Spec’ Porsche Boxster, ‘Production Spec’ Porsche Boxster & Porsche 924 Class options

The Porsche Championship runs in a three class format; the ‘Race Spec Porsche Boxster S’ (3.2 litre), the ‘Production Spec Porsche Boxster S’ and the ‘Porsche 924’. Drivers are eligible to score points for their individual class.

Race Spec Porsche Boxster S (3.2 litre)

In the main Race Spec Boxster class, eligible cars are the Porsche Boxster S, 3.2 litre, 986 and 987 models.

The Porsche Boxster is a well balanced mid-engined roadster with good innate handling characteristics. The Porsche Championship offers two classes for the 3.2 litre "S" version of the Porsche Boxster, which add significant power to an inherently well balanced chassis. The ‘Race Spec’ Class cars are stiffened and lowered, making a wonderfully handling, agile race car. With up to 280 BHP and top speeds in excess of 170 mph, this is one of the fastest and most powerful one-make championships in the UK.

The regulations are very tightly controlled to ensure that the cars on the grid are as evenly matched as possible. At the same time, all the essential racing components are added to the Race Spec Boxster Class to ensure that the cars are real race cars which are exciting to drive and race without being excessively fragile. Extreme modification is not permitted, so that the cars are equal in power and weight providing exciting, cost effective motorsport.

Some components are "control" items whose specification is set out in the Championship Regulations. The organisers can supply a kit of "control" parts that enable competitors to convert a road-going Porsche Boxster into an eligible Championship Race Spec car. The kit will include the roll cage, upgraded suspension components, brake pads, racing wheels and tyres.

The kits are now available at a cost of £3,297.90 plus VAT, which includes a set of Toyo Tyres. Using the increased purchasing power of the whole championship it has been possible to provide other items such as fire systems, seats, safety harnesses, data and video logging systems at a substantially lower price than would be available to individual competitors.

Production Spec Porsche Boxster S (3.2 litre)

From 2012, the Championship has an additional class for the Production Spec Boxster; eligible cars are the Porsche Boxster S, 3.2 litre, 986 model.

The Porsche Boxster is a well balanced mid-engined roadster with good innate handling characteristics. The Production Class is a natural fit in terms of budget and racing progression from the Porsche 924 class to the full Race Spec Boxster class. It is for the 986 model in standard road going form only.

With a standard road car available from £6,000 it is possible, with the addition of a roll cage and other mandatory safety requirements, to put a Production Spec Boxster on the track for £10,000 or less! Control Toyo tyres and standard wheels are mandatory while modifications are limited to make this an extremely competitive class.

The regulations are very tightly controlled to ensure that the cars on the grid are as evenly matched as possible.

Porsche 924 (2.0 litre naturally aspirated)

The Porsche 924 is a great first step on the racing ladder, and many drivers have moved on to success in other series having learned their race craft in the highly competitive world of 924 racing, which started in 1991. It is also attractive to the more experienced racer, providing close action with the emphasis on driver skill rather than outright power. The Porsche 924 is a low cost route into Porsche racing, using standard cars with affordable modifications to improve performance. The rules permit an easily achievable power limit which discourages cheque book engine tuning, ensuring that the winner is not simply the driver with the largest budget.

The 924's (like the Boxsters) continue to use the Toyo Proxes R888 as the "control" tyre. This is a full race tyre which resulted in dramatically improved lap times when it was first introduced to the Championship. Anyone used to track driving on normal road tyres will be astounded by the grip developed by the Porsche 924 on these tyres.

The Porsche 924 class in the Championship will continue to provide close, exciting and affordable racing for many years to come.
