Oulton Park - 8th May 2010

Double Delight for Kirkham and Clark at Oulton

A cold, damp morning greeted the BRSCC Porsche Championship drivers as they assembled for rounds 3 & 4 at Oulton Park on Saturday 8th May. The overnight rain had left the track wet and slippery. But as the clouds cleared it looked like the weather would stay dry……they hoped!

Qualifying -

It’s a difficult balance for the drivers on a damp track between caution and bravery. The smart drivers realised that the track was drying quickly, with only the approach to Hislops and Druids Corner requiring maximum respect by the end of the session. The even smarter drivers realised that the fastest lap would be set on the last lap of the session!

New Championship entrant Dave Clark put his Boxster on pole position, just 0.4 seconds ahead of Nick Hull. Sean Cooper, also in his first race, qualified 3rd, with Dave Hughes struggling for grip in 4th.

The 924’s lined up with Steve Brown ahead of Andrew Hannington, who was just 0.044 seconds ahead of Jayson Flegg. Round 2 winner Alistair Kirkham found himself the 4th 924, with round 1 winner Adam Croft the 6th of the 2 litre cars behind 5th place Alfred Piesinger.

Race 1

As the lights went out and the grid headed down to Old Hall corner, Sean Cooper in his Boxster had a terrible start and was swallowed up by most of the 924 field. Nick Hull found himself all crossed up in his Boxster but managed to recover. Dave Hughes followed suit but wasn’t so lucky and span into the barriers on the inside. Meanwhile, Steve Brown drove around the outside of Cascades to find himself 2nd overall in the race...Nick was having none of this and soon claimed it back! Jayson Flegg had a fantastic start and was running as the second 924. Andrew Hannington lost out and was in 4th behind Alistair Kirkham. Steve later ran wide at Lodge corner and spun, handing the lead to Jayson. Sean Cooper had recovered to the back of the Boxster pack and set off chasing them down. Alistair took the lead from Jayson on lap2. Jayson and Andrew Hannington battled it out until Lap 7 when Andrew took 2nd place.

In the Boxster class, Dave Clark claimed his first win in his first race with the championship. Nick Hull finished 2nd with debutant Sean Cooper 3rd.

Further down the 924 field Adam Croft took 5th place after a race-long battle with Alfred Piesinger, whilst Sean Siddall, Mark Marshall and Rupert Bullock were in a close tussle and finished within a second of each other.

Richard Jones completed his first ever race with some respectable lap times and a huge grin on his face!

Race 2

A fantastic start from Jayson saw him leading the 924’s into Cascades, with Alistair Kirkham and Andrew Hannington chasing. However, Jayson’s bad luck returned as he entered Island bend, when his exhaust broke loose, and he began to slow. By the 2nd lap Alistair led from Andrew with Steve Brown and Adam Croft in hot pursuit. On lap 5 Steve managed to get past Andrew at the Shell hairpin for 2nd place. With 2 laps to go Alistair began to slow, his car suddenly loosing grip. The chasing pack smelt blood and gave chase but with so few laps remaining Alistair was able to hold onto P1 for a well deserved second win of the day.

Geoff Hansen, also in his first race showed good speed chasing Mark Marshall down only to spin four laps from the end.

Dave Clark took his second Boxster victory after out braking a fast starting Nick Hull into Hislops. Sean Cooper did a better job of managing his tyres and came good near the end of the race to take 2nd from Nick. Dave Hughes rounded out the Boxster class in 4th.

Roll on Snetterton...!
