Cadwell Park - 10th April 2010

The 2010 BRSCC Porsche Championship got underway at a sun drenched Cadwell Park on 10th April.

Qualifying:

Nick Hull claimed pole position in the Boxster Class by a full second on Dave Hughes.

In the Porsche 924 class, Jayson Flegg claimed his first ever pole position, with Steve Brown and Mark Marshall making up second and third.

Race 1:

The two Boxster's of Nick and Dave finished as they started, whilst in the 924 race, Adam Croft recorded the first race win of his career, hotly pursued by Alistair Kirkham and Matt Upchurch.

Race 2:

It was a case of deja vu between Nick and Dave in the Boxster's, but an incident packed 924 race behind them saw Alistair Kirkham take his first ever win, ahead of Andrew Hannington and Steve Brown.

There is always a buzz in the pits for the first race of the season; old friendships renewed, mickeys taken, and winter cobwebs blown out! This year was no exception...in fact only the ice cream van man had a bigger smile on his face!

Qualifying (full report):

Nick Hull claimed pole position in the Boxter Class by a full second on Dave Hughes.

In the Porsche 924 class, Jayson Flegg claimed his first ever pole position on the grid, with Steve Brown and Mark Marshall making up second and third. In a cruel twist, a broken engine prevented Jayson making it to the grid for the race.

Race 1 (full report)

Porsche 924

With Jayson unable to race, Steve Brown was promoted to leading 924 driver. Steve clearly hadn’t cleared all of the cobwebs as he made a hash of the start and was beaten to the first corner by Mark Marshall, who promptly developed a misfire. Steve was now boxed in, and both lost out to the rest of the field going onto the back straight!

By the second lap the order was Adam Croft, Alistair Kirkham, and Matt Upchurch, with a recovering Steve Brown and a very fast Andrew Hannington giving chase. The top 5 maintained this order until the end of the race. Despite intense pressure, Adam held on to 1st place to record the first win of his career, Alistair taking 2nd and Matt 3rd.

Porsche Boxster

With only two Boxster's making it out for the first race, it looked like it would be a boring race for them, but that proved not to be the case.

Dave managed to get the drop on Nick from the line and took first place going into the first corner.

The Boxster's pulled out a 2 second a lap lead on the 924’s but they themselves were glued together lap after lap.

Finally Nick made a great move on Dave to take the lead, but Dave was in no way going to give up and he followed Nick all the way to the chequered flag with little more than a car length between them at the finish.

Race 2 (full report)

Porsche 924

A race of 2 parts….literally! The race was red flagged just before half distance after Mark Marshall had a huge shunt at Charlies corner. Fortunately, Mark was not hurt. His car is going to need some TLC though.

After the restart, Alistair Kirkham led with Andrew Hannington and Steve Brown chasing. Behind them into Coppice corner, Alfred Piesinger and Adam Croft made contact, retiring Alfred, and spinning Adam to the back of the field. The contact also covered Coppice corner with gravel. As the leaders came round for the second lap they found this usually flat out corner covered in debris, taking a variety of lines to avoid it they made it through safely. They did now have a new way of defending their position from the chasing driver, however, by firing stones from their hot tyres!

Alistair, on top form from his 2nd Place in race one, defended his lead until the end of the race and claimed his first ever win, with Andrew Hannington 2nd and Steve Brown 3rd.

Porsche Boxsters

This was a carbon copy of the first race.

Nick used his experience to good effect, and drove a great race, Dave showed that despite his rookie status he’s not short on talent and we can expect to see him at the sharp end in the future.

The fastest lap went to Nick with a 1min 44.127s but Dave managed a 1 min 44.172s!!!

A great day’s racing, and all of the drivers now look forward to resuming battle at Oulton Park on 8th May.
