924 40th Anniversary

Postby Chris Valentine » Sat Jan 03, 2015 4:39 pm

Just to note that 2015 is the 40th anniversary of the 924. There will be some PCGB events and meetings to mark this, but it would be nice to mark this anniversary ourselves too - especially as we've been racing them longer than anyone!

Great idea Chris. Maybe something on the website and some car decals? I'll happily put some on my car. 8-)

Articles are appearing in Porsche Post now as Porsche Club GB starts the celebrations of the 924's launch anniversary. On page 41 of the February edition there's talk of the first use of motorsport to promote the model, with a one-model championship being launched through BARC for entries from each of the UK dealerships. This brought in high-profile drivers including Gerry Marshall, Tony Dron and Andy Rouse. This led, it says, to the 924 Carrera GT entries at Le Mans in 1980. Strangely they opted for low-key drivers to avoid giving the impression the company were going for a win. The 924 went on to become Porsche's entry into the club racing scene with its cost advantage over the 911 models of the time.

Any plans for a 924 only race to mark the occasion?

Its already been raised with the BRSCC and they are interested. But so far that's all we have.

The Porsche 924 Owners' Club are now hosting their national 40th anniversary event at the Porsche Experience Centre at Silverstone on 21st May 2016. Tickets are in advance only - you can't pay on the gate - but at only £8 its a bit of a bargain.
